VTC 2014 Days four & five, new team mates and new challenges!

New Team Mate:

We have been joined by a new team mate Matt Collard, who completed a marathon row in November in 2:58:33.9 for the Princes Trust charity (his justgiving page is here if you want to contribute).

He is currently in training for his next marathon on the 6th April 2014, the same day as the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race. The company Matt works for are the primary sponsor of the race, so he is hoping to complete the marathon at the Boat Race itself alongside the Thames (details to be confirmed nearer the time). Matt suggested we could think of an idea for a team challenge or event on the day and he would love to have some fellow ETT'ers around for support or to take part in the challenge in some way too - any ideas team mates?

LTA Indoor Rowing World Record Attempt:

Talking of rowing challenges, Matt Brewster is attempting to set a new world record in the LTA adaptive category over 100k which he is rowing in aid of Sport Relief at Coombe Dean School in Plymouth on 21st March 2014, he has set up a page on www.justgiving.com/matt100k if you would like to support him.

VTC 2014:

On day five of the challenge and we are in 13th position out of 254 world-wide teams and have collectively rowed nearly a million metres in five days.

Keep rowing hard ETT'ers!

  1. Welcome to the ETTers Matt! A sub 3hr marathon time is impressive. Best of luck with your next challenge!

Best of luck Matt B with your adaptive LTA 100km row. Completing a 100km row would be an amazing accomplishment for anyone! You are an inspiration! You may already know that an aussie adaptive rower (LTA - PD class) named Richard Wassell completed a 100km row here in Australia last year.

As for the VTC i am finally back on the rower after a few months off it due to injury. However i'm just easing myself back into it so my contribution to the VTC won't be that much but i guess every metre helps us to climb up the rankings. Great work everyone who have contributed to the VTC so far!

    2. Hi Dave and thanks for the welcome! Yes, pretty happy with a sub 3 hour, especially as it was my first marathon of any kind.....

Also echo your comments and support of Matt B's 100k effort - quite something!

  2. Welcome Matt C and our other new team mates. And good luck with the training for 100k, Matt B. And merry new year everyone else!

A team challenge sounds great but I can't commit to definitely be available even online unfortunately as I'll be becoming a parent for the second time at some point very close to then... in terms of ideas though, the boat race is 6779m so how about something like rowing as many boat races as we can as a team? 8 people rowing 6779m is one boat. 2 people doing 13558m and 4 doing 6779m is also one boat and so on. How many can we do?

Hope everyone is enjoying the VTC as much as I am...?!

    1. Hi Lucas and thanks for the welcome. Also huge congratulations, but watch out, two is a whole bunch more tiring than one!!

I love the sound of your Boat Race related challenges, and also getting 'boats' of 8 rowers. Perhaps we can get as many 8 boats out of the Team as possible to all pull together on the same day for 6779m each. A little competition within the Team for the lowest combined time maybe?! Any more thoughts welcome....

  4. Thank you for your support, and so especially from Richard Wassell....its your fault I am doing this!!!!, you have shown it can be done (100k), by a disabled athlete.....just hope I don't row as badly as England play cricket or the record will stay down under
    Cheers

  5. It was always my intention to try to get other adaptive athletes involved so I guess I’ve achieved my aim.

I'm English Matt and share your disappointment in our cricket team

How's your training going? If I can offer any advice just hit me up on the Concept 2 logbook message book or whatever it's called.

    Cheers

    Richard
