New team mates!

After I posted the final CTC blog I checked our statistics for the last time and noticed that a new team mate Mark K from the USA had entered a time for the 30 minute session with 6433 metres. Nice work there Mark K! Loving the profile photograph.

Another keen newbie is Michael C who joined us on Tuesday. He is a friend of Chris V's and has brought 700,000 metres with him which has helped our affiliation team metres. He rowed 100k in a year on his C2 over 2011 - 2012 and is looking to up that next season!

Welcome to the team gents and we look forward to erging with you in the next team challenge (WEC) on the 15th March.

Last day of the Feb CTC

It has been a short month and we have had the best participation for the Cross Team Challenge for ages. 23 ETT'ers entered a time for the 30 minute session which is fantastic news.

Only two female ETT'ers rose to the challenge so we floated two boats into the points rankings - it could have been five boats : (
Hopefully in two months time when we have chosen the May Cross Team Challenge we will get more girls participating in the event.

Excellent work gents (and Karen) Ric powered his way to the top of the team yesterday with an impressive 8255 metres.

Let's keep the momentum for the CTC going and try for as many entries in March; the Taff Attack's 920 metres unrestricted session.

Women wanted!

Calling out to the lovely ladies in the team to join in this months 30 minute Cross Team Challenge.

Kim B, Jacqui L, Teodora P, Claire N, Karine G, Liz H, Victoria B and Suzanne L all regularly contribute to the team challenges so let's make February 2013 our best ever CTC by uploading a time for a 30 minute erg session.

The men have been out in force with big thanks to recent uploads from Mark, Ric, Ed, Chris V, Mike, Phil V and Phil N we now have six boats partially full.

If three female ETT'ers uploaded times by the end of Thursday 28th February we could have five boats in the points rankings... Come on ladies, we can do it!

March challenges

The next individual challenge is the March Madness starts on 1st March until 31st March.

"5000 metres a day keeps March Madness at bay"
Choose from two levels of participation:
The Basic Challenge: Row or ski 5000 metres each day for 25 days or more in March.
The Advanced Challenge: Row or ski 10,000 metres each day for 25 days or more in March.
  • This is an individual challenge. You do not need to belong to a team to participate.
  • Meters must be entered online in your online logbook.
  • Indoor rower and SkiErg meters only (no on water/on snow meters please). You can combine metres from each machine to reach the daily total of 5000 or 10,000 meters.
  • Kid's March Madness Challenge allows kids (aged 16 and under) to participate at 2500 metres.
  • Adaptive athletes can choose to participate at the 2500m, 5000m, or 10k levels.

The next team challenge is the World Erg Challenge starts on 15th March until 15th April.

Frank keeps fit on the rowing machine

Chris and I noticed Frank, the main character from the Netflix TV series House of Cards working out in his rowing machine. The machine was of the water variety rather than a C2 and he had it set up in his basement. I would recommend watching the House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey if you get a chance.

Where do you do your workouts? Is it in the local gym, spare room, garage or attic?

Chris and I have set up the spare bedroom as a gym. We installed black rubber flooring on Tuesday to reduce noise and protect the woo floor. Next to the C2 there is an area for stretching, weights and Chris' turbo trainer.

Nearly four boats floated in Feb CTC

We only need two female rowers and two male rowers to float four boats in the points rankings for this months Cross Team Challenge.

If four ETT'ers complete the 30 minutes session in the next five days it would ensure our best participation since August 2011!

Come on team mates - let's see four boats this month!

If you are looking for a new challenge...

If you are interested in an additional bit of challenge in your life you could take part in the 5 x 50 challenge and raise money for Comic Relief. It starts on the 31st March until 19th May 2013.
It is £5.00 to sign up and then the challenge begins - you have 50 days of running, rowing, swimming,  cycling 5k or any equivalent 30 minutes of exercise a day.

Read more about it at this website:

If any ETT'ers are interested I would be happy to sign up and create an Empty the Tanks team and when the action starts there will be a website that will rank us against other challengers.

Let me know if anybody would like to join me and I will register as soon as possible.

We have had a sudden flurry of Cross Team Challengers in the last few days, including a new mystery lightweight erger called Diggy, welcome to the team : )

I will give the 30 minutes session a blast this weekend as I'm not feeling 100% right now (sore throat and blocked nose) so we will definitely get Boat One into the points rankings soon.

May CTC ideas

We have had a great range of suggestions for the May Cross Team Challenge:

Craig W's Interval Pyramid with variable rests

500m 30 secs r
1000m 60 secs r
1500m 90 secs r
2000m 120 secs r
1500m 90 secs r
1000m 60 secs r
500m 30 secs r

Total 8000 metres (32 mins at 2.00/500m splits) (7.30 rest or recovery row at slow pace between intervals)
Total workout time approx 40 mins

Dave P suggested a row that was short, sharp, quirky and not too complicated!

Joe S' Mini Pyramid 1000m > 2min rest > 2000m > 2min rest > 1000m

Dave P, Norman and Esa all suggested a half marathon (21,097 metres) but it is too long a distance according to 'unofficial' CTC rules.

Caroline's ideas

ETT were ranked in the top 5% of teams for the JVTC, May is the fifth month of the year, so how about some ideas based around the number five?
  • 5 x 500 metres with 2 minute rests
  • 5 minute blast
  • 5 x 1 minute with 1 minute rests
  • 500m > 400m > 300m > 200m > 100m with 2 minute rests

Something based on a Star Wars theme?! May the fourth be with you....
7 films, R2D2, CP30, one Death Star ..... There is something we could work with here...

7 mins > 5 mins > 4 mins > 3 mins > 2 mins > 1 min with 1 min rests

Lots of things to think about and we have been given plenty of notice to sort it out.
Keep the ideas coming....

Rob D is the first man in the boat

Rob D has already rowed the 30 minute session is all alone in Boat one. Let's join him to keep him company. We need a female and three heavyweights to float this boat in the rankings.

As soon as we get a range of possible Cross Team Challenges for the May challenge I will create a little voting gadget to put on my blog so we can see which option is the most popular with ETT members.
