Core exercises

Chris has introduced me to Foundation Training which is a series of core exercises created by Dr. Eric Goodman. The simple exercises have been created to build a strong core to allieviate back problems and hip mobility issues (Dave P and Paul M try these out!!).

More information can be found here: http://foundationtraining.com/core

Chris and I have been doing the 'Founder' stretch holding it for 15 seconds three times every day for a month now - initially my lower back and the top of my hamstrings ached a bit due to the Founder exercise 'waking up some lazy muscles', but now I am feeling stronger in my core.

Try this as part of your New Year exercise regime ETT'ers!

BIRC 2013 news

Hi all, our only team mate Edward who had entered the BIRC this year had to pull out of racing on Sunday due a number of unforseen circumstances - all related to house matters (boiler breaking, flooding etc)... Which is a shame but there is always next year!

To ease his conscience he rowed a pretty impressive 2k time last weekend as part of his training program with 7:32.9 which is only a couple of seconds off his BIRC 2012 PB last March! This places Edward in the top 10% of his age group on the C2 world rankings. If he had been there on Sunday it would have put him in 7th position in this year's line up.

New team mate

We have been joined by a new team mate called Karyn,  from Australia.
Look out for her in the CTC competitions because she is keen to help us float more boats each month.
Welcome to the team Karyn!

Rainer Record holder!

Last weekend, Rainer and a bunch of his Estonian indoor rowing friends had 24-hour rowing contest.
He e-mailed me to tell me that; in three different age categories, three new world records were rowed: 2 men under 19 age, 2 men 30-39 age and 2 men 50-59 age. Amazing stuff.

The big news of the day was two that two Estonian records were set and Rainer was one of the Estonian record holders!
He took part in the 24hour team race (14 women and 16 men) and they rowed 362 km, beating the previous record with an additional 54 km.

Well done Rainer. You should feel proud of yourself; I know I can speak on behalf of ETT that we are very proud of you!!

December Challenges

Alongside the Holiday Challenge there are the following sessions to get your rowing teeth into this month:

December Cross Team Challenge

This is a beast of a session set by Team Oarsome. The interval set is a not-so-oarsome session of 3 x 2k with 3 minutes rest. You then enter your slowest 2k time as the CTC score.
Such an odd suggestion for a CTC challenge especially as this is the BIRC month where ergers will be in training mode tapering their sessions for the event - and most likely after the event will NOT want to do any combination of a 2k session for at least a month... We can only do our best team mates!

Rowing Company Challenge Series Round Four

This is a straight forward 5,000 metres. Read more about it here.

Last change to enter the BIRC is Sunday 1st December. Follow the link to get more details.

ETT at the BIRC 2013

Hello folks,

For the first time in about five years I am unable to attend the British Indoor Rowing Championships. On a positive note, we have our very own Edward J making the pilgrimage to Wales to compete in the noble event that is the 2k challenge!

Edward would like to you all to know that he would be happy to meet up with any fellow ETT'ers at the event and would appreciate the company and support of anybody who is competitng or is in the area.

Wishing Edward all the best for his race. He is racing in a new age group this year so he will be the freshest guy on the block. All the best Edward!

Are any other ETT'ers competing on the 7th December?

Hello folks, we have had a good response from the gents in our team this month with eleven participants. We still only have one boat floated due to the lack of females.... and lightweights....

November CTC and the Challenge Series Round Three

Hello people, I'm just updating you on the November individual challenges:
  • The November Cross Team Challenge is the four flying 250m repetitions and was chosen by the Forum Flyers Row 4 * 250 metres, 3 minutes rest. The rules are: free rate, free drag, ALL four reps MUST be from a standing start with no rowing in the three minutes rest. You need to enter the total time for the 1000 metres but do not include the rest time.
  • The Challenge Series Round Three is the Joe Simpson Challenge of 6344 metres which is the distance Joe fell from a mountain - Greg Searle gives you his advice about the challenge here.
  • There is a new challenge this November that links in with the moustache inspired Movember where people grow interesting facial fluff to raise money for prostate cancer; it involes the rowing machine (of course) and its called Rovember!! Read all about it here

Happy Halloween!

Wishing you all a ghoulish and gruesome halloween this year!

I have spent most of the week looking like the undead after a hard-core bought of intensive DIY. Removing a ceiling is VERY dusty work giving me attractive grey-hued dusty hair, blood-shot eyes and general cuts and grazes on my hands. Luckily the worst of it has been completed today - tomorrow RIP-ping up a wooden floor!

The following team mates completed the Rowing Company's Skeleton Challenge of rowing 31,000 metres since the 25th October.

Matthew Pinsent Interview with Priority Sports

Check out this cool little video interview with Matthew Pinsent.

Sunday, 20 October 2013

FTC 2013 Summary

Although the FTC 2013 finished on Tuesday it seems like ages ago now! I thought you might like to look at a few statistics and data analysis from the challenge.

We had a healthy sized team with 53 members which took us just into the largest team size category of 'virtual teams with 51 or more members'. In this category we achieved 8th place out of 15 teams.

This is an excellent finishing place as you can see that we are definitely pulling our weight with these big teams! If you ranked us by average metres per team member we would be in 3rd place!

As for the final position in the overall rankings, we achieved 9th place out of 268 teams. We rowed 8,096,956 metres which is our best cumulative result in fifteen C2 competitions.

Individual contributions to the team shows some impressive team mate dedication.

  • Three team mates rowed over 700k; extremely hard-core guys: Rob 735,001, Matt L 719,192 and Rainer 701,465
  • Beat rowed 424,147
  • Three team mates rowed over 300k; Fred 363,273, Paul M 327,027 and Diggy, 311,326
  • Eight team mates rowed over 200k; Mike B 250,680, Andy S 228,494, Bouke 228,126, Craig W 225,517, Joe S 208,046, Darren 207,692, Tim 205,717 and John B 201,059

  • Sixteen team mates rowed between 1,000 and 45,000 metres; John G 45,362, Birgit 45,000, Karine 42,059, Phil Y 40,000, Ian 38,696, Gunter 30,000, Preston 28,210, John S 19,157, Dave W 18,324, Diana 15,488, Bastian 10,000, Matt B 9,000, Esa 8,306, Mark B 8,022, Chris G 4,000 and Claire 1,016.

FTC 2013 last day!

Wow. We have definitely rowed our socks off this during this challenge finishing (at this moment in time) in 9th place out of 268 world-wide teams.

We achieved our goal of going for a top ten position and have almost hit our all time metre tally from the FTC 2010 of over 8 million metres - we are only about 70k away of achieving a team PB!!

I will blog about the extremely impressive individual achievements at the weekend. A massive thank you to everybody who has contributed metres; for those injured ETT'ers, thank you for your enthusiastic encouragement and support during your convalescence.

Although I haven't had a chance to blog everyday due to work commitments I really appreciate the comments, page views and genuine support from everybody in ETT.

Thanks everybody for such a brilliant competition! Back for more of the same on the 1st January 2014!? In the meantime go and have some fun / rest / both!! (delete which ever is most applicable).

ETT = 9th out of 268 teams with 7,940,252 metres

FTC 2013 DONE.

FTC 2013 28 Days later...

You might well be feeling like a zombie after four weeks of continuous erging but on the positive side we are nearing the end of the 2013 Fall Team Challenge with only three more days to make a difference!

I have been so impressed by the dedication and commitment from all participating members of the team during this challenge and have enjoyed the banter and encouragement from you on the blog and Facebook.

In numbers we have rowed an average of 250k a day; so with that in mind we should hopefully reach around 7,700,000 metres by the close of competition on Tuesday 15th October.

Are you planning on any extra metres / special erg session for the finale of the FTC 2013?
I am going to stick to several short mid-distance intervals this weekend to boost my metres.

Do any team mates in the top ten have any tips they would like to share as to how they are pulling in such big numbers?

We are still in 9th place out of 268 teams and have rowed over 6,947,000 metres in 28 days!

FTC 2013 Days 24 & 25

We are in the final week of competition and we are still holding onto 9th place. We had better not get complacent because our favourite 250+ strong Navy team are only 160k behind us.

Let's go large in the last few days ; )

Monday, 7 October 2013

FTC 2013 Day 23

We have got some knock out numbers from our hardcore ergers! As a team we have reached over 5,500,000 metres which has firmly placed us in 9th position out of 267 teams.

Just under half of the team have reached the 100k club, with Diggy, Paul M, Fred R with over 200k, Beat and Rainer with over 400k and the undisputed ETT champion of the FTC 2013 (so far) Rob D with 500k!!

Keep rowing hard folks we are in the finishing straight.....

Boat two floated in Oct CTC

Wow! Great news ETT'ers we have two boats floated in the points rankings in the first week of the October Cross Team Challenge. Ten team mates have entered a time for the 3861 metres set by Forum Flyers.

Let's make this month count and get four more boats floated to set a new ETT record - we can do it!

Bouke, Mark K, Rob D, Diggy, Maeve and Dave B have all rowed the 3861 metres required for this challenge - great stuff folks.

FTC 2013 Days 19 and 20

We are closing in on the third week of competition and we have had a fantastic run (row) of things over the past twenty days.

16 team mates have rowed triple digit metres with some guys at the top of the team putting in some impressive numbers.

We need to say a big thank you to the rest of the ETT'ers who put in metres everyday - we wouldn't be in the top ten if it wasn't for your contribution to the teams total metres too!

The total for today is: 4,691,594 metres

FTC 2013 Day 18

WOOAhhh!! We have shot straight past Team NAS into 9th place today which is fantastic news. Nice work ETT'ers.

We are about 300k ahead of the Navy ergers but as we know with all team competitions things could change... so keep on rowing strong.

Here is an overview of individual contributions - with our stronghold of Rob, Matt and Rainer in the top three slots and eleven team mates in the 100k or 200k club already!

FTC 2013 Day 16 and 17

We have maintained our top ten slot over the past two days and have clocked up nearly 4 million metres between us! Not bad going for a team that only has 53 members rowing their socks off!

Keep up the awesome work ETT'ers and as usual will do a more detailed analysis of our progress this weekend.

October CTC and Challenge Series Round Two

Its that time again where we motivate ourselves to get involved in more individual monthly challenges.

Last month saw us float two boats into the rankings for the September Cross Team Challenge with three partially filled boats due to the lack of either female or lightweight rowers. We had a great ETT presence on the leader board and for future CTC's we now need to co-ordinate the combination of rowers to ensure we float more boats into the points rankings this month.

Well done to those who took part, here are the final standings for the1k session:

FTC 2013 Day 15

We have been such a productive team over the past 15 days and since we have had our 52nd team mate join us for the challenge we have entered into the '51 or more members' category in the rankings.

We are currently 8th out of 16 team with 51+ members:

And we are in 9th place in the full rankings out of 260 world-wide teams. We have rowed over 3,500,000 metres!!

We have only 16 days left of the challenge so we are right in the middle of the FTC - at this challenging stage of the competition, what are you doing to keep motivated and energised?
Are you eating / drinking anything different to keep your energy levels up?
Share some tips with fellow team mates!

For those team mates who have followed the blog for a while will know my favourite energy foods are: Sweet potatoes or oats, and I have occasionally used some Nuun tablets in my water for longer endurance sessions.

FTC 2013 Day 14

Two weeks into the challenge and we have worked really hard to keep ourselves in the top ten out of world-wide indoor rowing teams - nice work folks!

We have erged 3,432,119 metres in 14 days with over 11 teams who have contributed 100k and more!

As a collective we have been erging an average of 240k each day so if we keep this up we cold be hitting a final total of around 7 million metres by the end of the challenge.

Keep erging ETT'ers!!

FTC 2013 update

Its been a hectic week at work and I haven't had a chance to keep you all updated on team progress - so I will do a quick summary of the last few days.

On day 11 we maintained our 9th place position with over 2,500,000 metres which is pretty good going!

Day 12 saw us slip back into 10th place with the NAS team in 9th position (double booo) : (

Day 13 has 52 ETT members participating in the FTC with an impressive 3 million metres rowed by the team. Over ten team mates have joined and surpassed the 100k club, in fact Rob, Rainer and Beat have moved into the exclusive 200k club!! Nice work.

A big thanks to all team mates who have been toiling away on their C2's in the garage / gym / fitness centre / shed / basement / attic....

What is motivating you right now?

Do you want to hit a set target / personal goal?
Is it a health fix you are after?
Do you just want to beat those pesky NAS ergers?
Let me know you reasons for taking part ; )

Keep rowing strong!

FTC 2013 Day 10

Ten days in and we are 10th out of 248 teams - pretty good going team mates. Let's see if we can knock the Navy ergers off the 9th spot by tomorrow ; )
Who's with me?
How are you all feeling after ten days of erging?

FTC 2013 Day nine

Day nine; two millions metres, 50 team mates signed up and we are still in the top ten - rock on ETT'ers!!

Sunday, 22 September 2013

FTC 2013 Day eight

We have had a fantastic first week in the Fall Team Challenge with 45 team mates participating with such enthusiasm. We also need to welcome a couple of newbies to the team:

  • Gunter Timmermann, 51 from the Netherlands
  • Michael Siers,  49 from USA
The team are being lead by our most dedicated rowers of this challenge, Rob, Rainer, Beat and Matt L - keep up the great work guys!

We need to send our best wishes to some of our regular team mates who haven't been able to join us in the FTC due to injuries:
  • Mark B who is recovering from his hernia operation - best wishes for a fast recovery
  • Dave P who is also recovering from injuries too!
Moving forward to next week we need to maintain our top ten slot and see if we can sneak our way into 8th or 9th position.

Saturday, 21 September 2013

FTC 2013 Days six and seven

Yesterday we moved up to 9th position (yeah!) but today we have fallen back to 10th (boooooo!) out of 233 teams (only 20k short of achieving 9th place). On a positive note, we are still in the top ten which is a very good start to the competition.

As a team we are erging an average of 250k a day with 42 team mates contributing metres out of 49 participants. There are some big numbers being pulled in with Rob, Beat and Rainer in the 100k club already!

Remember ETT'ers all metres count; so get on that C2 and help the team row past those Navy boys (thanks for clearing that up Jim wasn't sure what the NAS bit stood for!) at Team NAS Pensacola.

Thursday, 19 September 2013

FTC 2013 Day five

We have slipped down to eleventh position due to a 400+ strong military team called Team NAS Pensacola who we have come across in previous team challenges - we will have to see what we can do to knock these army-ergers off their top ten slot.

Talking of army-ergers - Rob (Robo-erg) has been working like a machine with nearly 125k in only 5 days!!

Well done to all team mates - I will write a more detailed blog-post at the weekend ; )

FTC 2013 Day four top ten-tastic

Excellent news folks, we have maintained our top ten position today out of 220 teams!
Rock on ETT'ers.

Tuesday, 17 September 2013

FTC 2013 Day three and still in the top 10!

We are settling into a rhythm and we are successfully maintaining a top ten slot in the first week of competition. We are in it for the long haul so keep it steady and find a routine that you can stick to rather than going crazy-then-crash-and-burn style approach (we can save for the last few days of the challenge!).

Thank you to all the ETT'ers who have participated so far, keep up the great work team.

FTC 2013 Day One and Two

The webpage did not update yesterday's standings so I can only comment on what we have achieved today - and we have rowed our way into the top ten already with 9th position out of 171 teams.

I haven't had a chance to upload my metres yet - I know - poor show from the ETT Captain (I promise to upload tomorrow : )

Good going Rob, you are in the number one slot.
