6 team mates have rowed the November Cross Team Challenge of 2 x 20 minutes with a 5 minute rest. Poor Kevin is all alone in Boat 2, we need 4 people to do a CTC before the end of the month to get the second boat in the rankings.

Next month's Cross Team Challenge set by the Rote87 team is a weird one:

The Rote87's 10 * 300 meters Penalty Challenge

Row 10 * 300 meters with 2 minutes rest. Each round must be at least 10 average watts better (faster) than the previous.
Each time the rower fails to meet the +10 watts requirement, 2.5 penalty seconds shall be added when summing the total time.
Your result is the time you used for rowing your ten 300 meters plus penalty seconds, if any.

e.g. 420.0 W, 430.0, 350.2 (fail), 360.3, 370.9, 360.4(fail), 371.0, 400.5, 410.0(fail), 460.0 will add three penalties, i.e. 3 * 2.5 seconds to the total time.
Rest can be active or passive.

Good luck with this one folks?!

5 team mates have rowed the November Cross Team Challenge of 2 x 20 minute rows with 5 minutes rest. Congratulations go out to Mark, David, Jim, Andrew and Kevin.

Calling all girls - in the next 4 days we need some female Empty the Tankers to participate in this challenge to get boat 1 in the rankings. I will try to fit one in at the weekend....

2010 Holiday Challenge

This is an individual challenge to row 100,000 meters or 200,000 meters between 25th November (U.S. Thanksgiving) and 11:59 p.m. ET 24th December.

The Deadline for entering meters is
January 4th, 2011.

Off-set the turkey and extra mince pies during the Christmas break by taking part in this individual challenge.

An important date for your calendar - the January Virtual Team Challenge starts on the 1st January 2011.

Some Empty the Tanks team mates are planning to compete at the English Indoor Rowing Championships in Manchester on Sunday 30th January 2011 - who is up for representing the team?

Empty the Tanks at the BIRC

Del, Mark, Chris, Karen, Dave and myself all got up early and travelled to the centre of Birmingham to take part in the world's largest indoor rowing event - The British Indoor Rowing Championships. It was great to see everybody at the National Indoor Arena.

Del was the first team mate to attack the 2k in the heavyweight 45-49 at 10:15, he managed a decent 2k with 06:47.2, coming 17th out of 63.

Then Chris and Dave raced in the 40-44 lightweight at 10:30. Chris pulled in an impressive sub 7 row (particularly after recovering from a painful leg injury only 3 weeks ago) with 06:57.0 and he came 10th out of 16. Unfortunately, Dave had to give up with only 280 metres to go. Better luck next year Dave.

Karen (08:46.5) and Caroline (08:46.6) raced in the lightweight 35-39 at 11:15 and came second to last and last respectively out of 6 rowers. The good news was that I pulled in a personal best time taking 3 seconds off last years time.

Mark also rowed at 11:15 in the heavyweight 30-34 category and also pulled in a personal best time of 06:33.4. He came 9th out of 20. Great stuff Mark.

We wanted a team photo of all competitors, but we couldn't find Dave after his race - sorry Dave. Members from left to right are: Del, Mark, Chris, Caroline and Karen.

Last day of the Oct CTC

It looks like we may not float a boat in the Cross Team Challenge this month, because only 4 team mates have taken up the challenge of the Age Without Limits crazy 100>900>100 metre interval pyramid.
Well done to the hard-core few who have entered this month: Chris, Mark B, David J and myself.

Hope you are all enjoying a fun Halloween!

Penultimate day of the October CTC

After a bit of a break blogging (OK, I was on holiday in New York) I thought I should get back to encouraging the team.
With only 2 days left of the Cross Team Challenge we still need one more Empty the Tanks member to get our boat in the rankings.
The following team mates have already rowed the AWL pyramid interval challenge of 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 800, 700, 600, 500, 400, 300, 200, 100 with 45 second rests.

FTC the final day

31 days of hard-core physical exercise and mental endurance from 48 members has resulted in the team's first top ten position in 2 years of competition.
We have rowed a total of 7,967,292 metres and as a team we averaged about 200,000 metres every day of the challenge. Final position as of today: 8th out of 280 teams, which puts us in the top 3% of teams world-wide.
Thank you to all the bloggers on the team page, it certainly made it more fun for me to report about the progress of the team having your comments to read and respond to.
Have a rest and enjoy a C2-free weekend, hopefully you will have forgotten about the pain and tiredness just in time for the January Virtual Team Challenge in 2011.

Thursday, 14 October 2010

FTC Day 30

7,510,235 metres into the challenge and one more day to make a difference.
Can we make it to 7th position?
Keep on rowing team - we are nearly there now.

Wednesday, 13 October 2010

FTC Day 29

I agree with Del, Friday can not come soon enough.
People are getting tired and longing for a break, but if we want to keep that top ten spot we have to keep rowing for the next 2 days.
We have reached 7,313,156 metres today. Excellent stuff team mates.

Tuesday, 12 October 2010

FTC Day 28

Its all hotting up in the top ten. As Del pointed out yesterday, we are only behind the UK Rowers by about 400k - could we push for a top 7 finish? Let's hope that some of our team mates have some extra metres that need logging at the last minute.....
We have completed over 4 weeks of continuous rowing and have clocked up over 7 million metres between 47 rowers - great stuff.
Using Andy's words "Lets finish strong".

Monday, 11 October 2010

FTC Day 27

Matt L has swooped into the top spot with an overnight upload of over 400,000 metres. We should certainly feel safe in 8th position now because we are 600k ahead of those 'pesky' (as we now like to call them) Island Rowers.
Today's total metres stand at 6,814,419.

Sunday, 10 October 2010

FTC Day 26

We have reached 6,212,188 metres and are holding on to our 8th place ranking.
The top 3 Empty the Tanks team mates are giving it their all in the final week, here are the latest figures:

1 Derek Kyme 435,639
2 Dan McCarthy 430,988
3 John Dunn 353,331

Only 5 days to go before the end of the competition. We can do it team - keep ROWING STRONG.

Saturday, 9 October 2010

FTC Day 25

We have hit 6,029,661 metres and still in 8th place - great work folks.
Rowing into the final straight and we have the finish line in sight - what are you looking forward to doing after Friday 15th October (instead of rowing)?

After the FTC I have got an appointment with my sofa and a big pile of DVD's to watch. Unfortunately I can't take a total break from rowing because I am on the C2 interactive training program for the British Indoor Rowing Championships in November.

For the cycling enthusiasts out there

There is a one night only showing of the cycling film Chasing Legends on the 21st October at a cinema near you. It follows the Team HTC Columbia and has commentary from Phil Liggett and Paul Sherman. There are also comments from Lance Armstrong and Eddie Merckx.

Friday, 8 October 2010

FTC Day 24

With only 7 days left to play with we should try increasing our work-outs by an extra 1k, you never know it might just make the difference. We have hit an impressive 5,817,655 metres. UK Rowers are ahead with just over 400k and the Island Rowers are not too far behind us with 5,785,501 metres.
Dan M has re-gained first place in the team and the battle for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th positions rage on between the following members:
1 Dan McCarthy

2 Derek Kyme

3 Mark Bower

4 John Dunn

5 Andy Soyring

Thursday, 7 October 2010

FTC Day 23

Del is the new leader of the pack. He has stormed to the top spot with 355,089 metres (only 3k ahead of Dan M) - excellent stuff Derek.
We had better keep an eye on the Island Rowers from the USA, because when I logged on this morning they had pushed us down to 9th place.
Due to the hard work of Del, the David's and the rest of Empty the Tanks team mates we are back in 8th (again).
For those of you who have taken an interest in the race within a race, David M is now heading up the David Row-off. David A e-mailed me this morning to say he was unable to put in any more hard-core rows because the surgeon who removed his tonsils on Tuesday 'painted a picture of vigorous exercise leading to a burst wound' - (I think this put him off). Thanks David A for all your hard work during this team challenge. Hope to see you in the January Virtual Team Challenge in 2011.

Wednesday, 6 October 2010

FTC Day 22

Today has been the day of the David Row-off.
The three David's have been head-to-head for a few weeks now and the results are in:
David Acres M35240,842
7 David Mikoska M36235,035
8 David Junta M43231,010
David A is in the lead today, but it is very close - things might change tomorrow.

We are in 8th place and have rowed an amazing 5,445,510 metres.

Tuesday, 5 October 2010

FTC Day 21

5,238,755 metres in and an 8th place ranking.
10 days left in the competition - let's make it count.

FTC Day 20

The 21st day of the challenge and we have hit 5,051,246 metres. There is also a new top position in the team - Dan M who has rowed 320,959 metres. Great stuff Dan.

Sunday, 3 October 2010

FTC Day 19

Ending the week on a high - still in 7th place with 4,714,737 metres. We are only 200k behind UK Rowers, if only we could find some extra metres from somewhere...

So far we have discussed what music motivates Empty the Tanks members and what they wear during a workout.

The next question is - What is your indoor rowing environment like? Some C2 forum users refer to this place as 'the dungeon' as it is where torture is inflicted.

My C2 is in the spare room (or as I like to call it The Gym). I share my C2 with Chris and it has been customised with a bright blue C Breeze and a Row-Right slide guide. I have a fan pointing directly at me with my Macbook close at hand so I can watch things on i-player or listen to music.

Saturday, 2 October 2010

FTC Day 18

7th place with 4,459,506 metres - yahooooo
We scooted past the Island Rowers this morning and have stayed in the lead since then -Top work Empty the Tankers.

Friday, 1 October 2010

FTC Day 17

Yesterday was touch and go for a bit whether we would hold on to 8th place. Luckily a number of Empty the Tanks team mates uploaded around 11pm (including Rob H who signed up for FTC just before the cut-off point) which catapulted us back up the rankings.
We are back in 8th place again - yipeeee
Today's metres are 4,261,524 over 100,000 metres in front of the Island Rowers.
Only 13 days left, keep up the great work team.

Thursday, 30 September 2010

FTC Day 16

We need to watch out for the team in 9th place - The Island Rowing Club are only 9,000 metres behind us today.
We had better not get too relaxed with our 3,951,083 metres and pick up the pace this weekend. We do not need those pesky Island Rowers to steal our rightful 8th place position in the 3rd week of the challenge.
Oh-oo, looks like I blogged too soon, they have just sneaked ahead with only 1k! Aahhhh

Age Without Limits have set a pyramid row for the October Cross Team Challenge.

Half way through the competition and we are on track to stay in the top ten for the rest of the Fall Team Challenge.
Still in 8th position with 3,495,518 metres.

Monday, 27 September 2010

FTC Day 13

Still in 8th place with 3,204,908 metres. Let's keep it going team and stay in the top ten.

So we have found out what kind of music you listen to - What does your rowing outfit consist of?

Depending on the weather I wear shorts or 3/4 pants, vest, cycling shoes (weird I know) and gloves. I wear my heart rate monitor during my interval training for the BIRC.

C2 broken in two

Lance has been doing such hardcore rowing during the Fall Team Challenge that he has broken his C2 - talk about dedication to the cause. He has arranged for somebody to weld it together and will be back helping the team with metres very soon.

FTC Day 12

Wahooo we have rowed our way up to 8th position with 2,982,348 metres. Fantastic effort team.

The following rowers have demonstrated massive dedication to the cause over the past week and a half:
1 Matt Longman 187,082
2 Mark Bower 176,631
3 Dan McCarthy 159,486
4 John Dunn 158,291

FTC Day 9

2,354,074 metres into the competition and 9th place position out of 270 teams.

Wednesday, 22 September 2010

FTC Day 8

We have reached a milestone moment in Empty the Tanks history - we have maintained a top ten position for a full week.
42 members have contributed towards the 2,078,714 metres we have clocked up so far - that's an average of 40,000 metres each.
Keep up the great work and let's see if the few remaining team mates who have signed up can upload their metres to propel us into 8th place out of 268 teams.

Tuesday, 21 September 2010

FTC Day 7

Week one and we are still in the top ten - a fantastic result team.
The 39 active members of the team have clocked up 1,783,901 metres in 7 days.
It looks like we have a few internal battles for pole position between Mark B, David A and Todor who have each pulled in over 100k and David M, Matt L and John D very close with over 92k.
Well done to all members who have signed up and contributed metres in week one, 14 team mates still need to upload their metres.

Just out of interest - what is your rowing music of choice to get you through the pain?
I am loving early 90's House at the moment - has anybody else got any music related confessions?

Boat 1 floated in the Sept CTC

Thanks to Chris V we have our first boat in the Cross Team Challenge ranking.
6 team mates have rowed the 10 x 1 minute intervals with 1 minute rests.
We need 4 more team mates to float in boat 2 - incorporate some intervals into the Fall Team Challenge.

New NZ team mate

We have a new team mate called Darren, 30 from New Zealand. He has already signed up for the Fall Rowing Challenge and he used to row competitively - he will be able to help us with our aim for a top ten position.

The competition starts on the 15th September and the idea is that we have to row as many metres as possible as a team - all metres count, so even if you only row 20,000 metres during the month of the competition get it logged - it might just make the difference.

20 Empty the Tanks team mates have signed up for the FRC 2010:

Mark Bower

Simon Coleman

Mike Schnell

Lance Peters

Derek Kyme

Duncan Murray

Andrew Hewitt

Christiane Racette-White

Chris Venables

Caroline Joynson

Karen Venables

Richard Gatward

Sven Simon

Sarah Z

Bryon Rankin

John Dunn

Peter Yeeles

Darren Whetton

David Junta

Boat 1 floated in the August CTC

5 Empty the Tanks team mates have rowed 3 x 1,000 metres with 2 minutes rest for the August Cross Team Challenge, which means we have one boat floated in the rankings. We are positioned 11/30 boats and have gained 4 points.
Its strange how the time goes by so slowly during the rowing part of the interval session but seems to speed up during the 2 minute rest period - did anybody else notice that?

Well done Andrew

Andrew is the only brave team mate to tackle the 2k CTC.

The 2,000 metre row sounds innocent enough for the uninitiated, but when you have felt the burning lungs and 'jelly-legs' of a hard 2k - you know it shouldn't be taken lightly...

Having said all that - we still need 4 more victims / volunteers to put in some metres so we can float a boat in this month's CTC challenge.

The July Cross Team Challenge has been selected by the Eh! Team - a simple unrestricted 2,000 metre row.
